If he's thinking about a job in technology, always be prepared to change direction, and often quite quickly, to take advantage of whichever way the white hot wind is blowing.
A lot of IT stuff is plug-n-play these days, which can be done by monkeys, so services is the better option.
Out of all the roles I've had over my career, my favourite was one where I could sit on the beach - anywhere in the world - for 3 weeks out of 4 and work remotely off a laptop - and I really only turned up at the office that one week a month to book my hours and get them signed off.

My advice would be to not chase salary young.
I did this, starting adapting my life to the bigger salaries and you leave yourself in a position where you have to earn big salaries to fund everything.
There are loads of jobs in my field I would love to do, but can't because I've adapted everything current and future to earning at least what I'm on now.
If I started again, id also do something which allowed me to go it alone, so I don't have to put up with bosses/colleagues/staff.

I earn it, just like most in here.
Tell the lad to do something he enjoys and has an interest it, nothing worse than going to work and doing something you dont like, also be flexible and dont get bogged down in the same job.
i have had several careers and regularly change when i get bored or disinterested in what i do, started out in Catering, but worked for Banks, in healthcare, ran my own business and currently work for government.

I only got into the London College of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering really on a letter from my sixth form tutor that although i only got 5 O'levels and 2 A levels (minimum back in 1982 was 8 Os and 3 As's)

That i was a bit of a waster who didn't like school or took it to seriously..he assured them I'd qualify, and i did...
Started at Saab in Barnet who had an engineering filial there.. boring as fuck...
Started as a Lift Engineer at Otis in 1986, and was a tester in 1988, part of Otis international in 1989, done a job in Sweden..
Meet Mrs icwhs, moved here in 1989.
Opened my own company in 1996, alone, now were two who own the business and now have 18 employees..
Still love being in the field but will sell up in a year or two.

I'm part of the scientific conspiracy that frightens Infidel. I sometimes wear a skull cap to terrify Golden Oldie too, but I don't take that bit seriously.

I am employed by an international modelling agency. They are worried about their models pulling random blokes and the reputational damage that would do so they employ me to service them sexually.
The hours are a bit anti social sometimes but it's okay.

Tech companies come in many many different guises. London is the centre of the financial tech world. Anyone with good skills in technology, an entrepreneurial mind and lots of charm will be super successful.
